Poll of Polls shows Tories at record low in Scotland
    Monday, 2nd October, 2006

SNP leader Alex Salmond MP has commented on a series of developments that are particularly damaging to the Conservative party in Scotland. These include:

    * A new analysis of the eight published opinion polls in Scotland for this year shows the Tories on an average of just below 13 per cent of the vote - a full 3 points lower than their miserable performance in the Scottish elections of 2003.

    * One of Scotland's leading historians, who has been a strong supporter of the union, has defected to the independence cause.

    * David Mundell, Scotland's only Conservative MP, calls David Cameron's last manifesto "inconsistent and ill thought out".

Commenting on the developments, Mr Salmond said:

"The Tories are heading where no major party has gone before - towards single figures in the Scottish polls.

"David Cameron is the candy floss man in Scotland - sweet, sickly, insubstantial and blowing about in the wind.

"Today, David Mundell, speaking on Radio Scotland's "Sunday Live" programme, described the last Tory election manifesto as "inconsistent and ill thought out". David Cameron wrote the last Tory manifesto! Such an elementary gaffe by their only Scottish MP illustrates the paucity of talent available to the Scottish Tories.

Further illustrating the extent of the crisis in the Scottish Tories, former candidate and leading Tory historian, Michael Fry has converted to supporting independence and berated the ineffectiveness of the Tories.

    Mr Salmond commented:

"I think it is significant that a historian of some note should conclude, after researching a book on the union, that it is time for independence. Mr Fry's views on the ineptitude of the Scottish Tory Party chime with the rest of the population."

    Note to editors:

The poll of polls includes all constituency results of all eight published polls in 2006 for the Scottish elections. There have been two MORI surveys completed in March and June , three TNS Systems Three surveys in July and August, one Scottish Opinion survey published in August and two YouGov surveys publishes in April and September. The most recent survey is the Sunday Times YouGov survey for published on the 10 September 2006.
