SNP ahead as Labour hit by poll double whammy
    Wednesday, 1st November, 2006

    - ICM/SCOTSMAN SHOW SNP AHEAD IN HOLYROOD VOTE
    - MAJORITY OF SCOTS SUPPORT SNP'S POSITIVE CASE FOR INDEPENDENCE

Speaking following the publication this morning (Wednesday) of the ICM poll for the Scotsman which shows the SNP neck and neck with Labour in the Holyrood vote and support for Independence at an all time high, SNP Deputy Leader Nicola Sturgeon MSP said the research underlined the fact that next year's Scottish election is a two-horse race between Labour and the SNP, and that Labour's tired scaremongering has only increased the popularity of Independence for Scotland.

Speaking this morning, Ms Sturgeon said:

"The results of this poll further confirms the fact that Labour are floundering in Scotland while the momentum is now clearly with the SNP. This election is a two-horse race between the tired, rudderless Labour Party under Mr McConnell and a fresh-thinking SNP with Alex Salmond as our candidate for First Minister.

"There is much for us to do before the election next May, but it's clear that the Scottish people are increasingly convinced that it's time for a change in Scotland, and the SNP are the only party that can deliver the progress people here are crying out for. Scots want a forward thinking, successful country with a government committed to progress, and that's why the SNP are moving forward. Scots know that only the SNP are committed to changing their lives for the better.

"In addition, this poll shows that Labour's tired scaremongering tactics are simply failing in face of the SNP's positive case for Scottish Independence. While McConnell and Brown are busy wrapping themselves in the Union Jack, more and more Scots believe that it's time for the Parliament in Holyrood to have the same powers as the parliaments of successful Independent counties such as Norway and Ireland. Scots want a real parliament that can effect positive change on their lives, their families and our communities, not one stuck in the past, wed to remote control from London.

"Over the next six months, the SNP will redouble our efforts to capitalise on our current momentum, and deliver the positive programme for government the people of Scotland deserve. More and more Scots know now that it's time for the SNP."
