SNP RELEASE GORDON BROWN ARTICLE FROM 1994:
"WHY SCOTLAND MEANS THE WORLD TO ME"
Following remarks made by Gordon Brown that he wants England to win the World Cup, the SNP have released a chapter called 'Why Scotland means the world to me' written by Gordon Brown in a book called 'Football and the Commons people'.
The book was edited by Alastair Campbell. In the chapter, Gordon Brown says that he remembers "one of the greatest hours from the boys in blue... was watching the humbling of England" by Scotland in 1967.
He also says about the Scottish team "if the worst comes to the worst, we still beat England sometimes". He also recalls "scenes of delirium" when Scotland fans tore up bits of turf from Wembley.
Commenting on the development, SNP Leader Alex Salmond said:
"Mr Brown is making himself look ridiculous as his anxiety to hold on to the keys of No. 10 makes him lose touch with his roots and identity.
"I'm sure the people of England would prefer someone who is honest and forthright rather than someone who is eager to please.
"In 1994, he reminisced about the humbling of England by Scotland in 1967, now he wants England to win the World Cup.
"If you can't trust Mr Brown to tell the truth about which football team he supports, you can't trust in his ability to look after the interests of Scotland, or indeed, become Prime Minister.
"Those whom the Gods seek to destroy, they first render ridiculous. Right now, Gordon Brown looks ridiculous."
