Lib-Dems - "keeping Labour in power"
    Friday, 16th February, 2007

Today in Aviemore the SNP unveiled its latest campaign image alerting voters to the role the Lib-Dems have played in propping up Labour in Scotland by being part of the Executive. The Lib-Dems are currently holding their conference in Aviemore.

Commenting on the new image the SNP's Campaign Director Mr Angus Robertson MP said:

"After 10 years of Labour too little has been achieved. It's time for new thinking and a fresh approach in Scotland.

"However the Lib-Dems have kept Labour in power in Scotland. Scottish families have paid the price with sky-high council taxes and the closure of local health facilities.

"The coming election is a two horse race between the SNP and Labour and a vote for the Lib-Dems is a vote for Labour as the past eight years have shown.

"The choice is between Jack McConnell or Alex Salmond for Scotland's First Minister. A choice between scaremongering or success for Scotland."

    Notes for Editors:

In coalition with Labour the LibDems have reneged on a number of policies they were voted in on.

    * Tuition Fees - In 1999 they said their scrapping was non-negotiable. They negotiated and brought in the graduate endowment - tuition fees by the back door. Now they say they want to scrap the graduate endowment.

    * Council Tax - They say they want to scrap the Council Tax as soon as possible. Yet in a 2004 Parliamentary vote they voted against a motion simply saying "the council tax should be abolished and replaced with an income-based alternative."

    * GM Crops - In 2002 Lib-Dem Parliamentarians signed a petition against GM Crop testing in Munlochy yet it was the Lib-Dem Rural Affairs Minister Ross Finnie who was pushing through the policy. In 2004 Lib-Dem MSPs helped defeat a motion to block the commercial growing of GM maize by just one vote.

    * Nuclear Power - Lib-Dems have said that opposing nuclear power will be one of their manifesto pledges for 2007. Yet in 2004 when the Greens tabled a Parliamentary motion which quoted Nicol Stephen's opposition they voted against it.

    * Tolls - In Dunfermline they campaigned against £4 tolls - which their own councillors voted for. Now they are campaigning to abolish the Forth Road Bridge tolls when they voted to keep them in a Scottish Parliament vote just this month.

    * Airborne - In their 2003 manifesto the Lib-Dems said they would "reduce youth crime" with a commitment to "increase support for schemes" such as "the Airborne project". In February 2004 Lib-Dem MSPs voted to close Airborne.
