SNP MP Angus MacNeil has today alerted Scotland Yard regarding allegations that the late Peter Law was offered a peerage to withdraw his independent candidacy at the last General Election.
Mr Law stood as an Independent in the seat of Blaenau Gwent, and overturned a Labour majority of 19 000 after becoming elected Welsh AM for Labour in 1999.
Mr MacNeil said:
"I have alerted Scotland Yard this morning regarding these allegations, who appear to be extremely interested in them. I believe that if these allegations are found to be accurate then an offence has been committed under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906.
"This Government has shown time and time again a lack of respect, not only for the main legislative body of the UK, but also for the people that voted them into power."
