£853 will be sent to London per Scot in 2006/7
The SNP Leader Alex Salmond MP and the SNP's Shadow Economy Spokesperson Stewart Hosie MP today published the party's latest economic paper, 'Scotland in Surplus' which demonstrates that for this year Scots subsidise the rest of the UK by a figure amounting to 853 pounds a year for every man, woman and child in the country.
The new paper, 'Scotland in Surplus' demolishes the argument that Scotland is subsidised in the UK using official Government data as its basis.
Mr Hosie said:
"For years anti-Scottish politicians have peddled the myth that Scotland is subsidised from the rest of the UK. This paper, which uses official Government data, demolishes this anti-Scottish argument.
"Our opponents have also argued that Scotland could not survive economically as an independent country, despite the fact that we now know from secret papers in the 1970's that their own economic advisers were telling a very different story in private.
"This paper shows that the fact of the matter is that for this year Scotland, compared to Westminster, is in relative surplus to the tune of £4.34 billion and in absolute surplus by some £1.01 billion."
SNP Leader Alex Salmond MP added:
"These figures show not only that Scotland is in surplus in the current financial year, but that the immediate economic benefits of Independence would mean an additional £853 for every man woman and child in Scotland.
"Only Independence can allow Scotland to meet our full economic potential by giving the Scottish people responsibility over our own finances.
"Now this paper has brought the issue up to date and have proved once and for all that Scotland is in surplus."
