Salmond: SNP must work to win in 2007
    Saturday, 1st July, 2006

COLLAPSE OF LABOUR VOTE NOT ENOUGH FOR SNP

SNP Leader Alex Salmond MP today pledged to redouble the SNP's efforts to win the 2007 Scottish election. The call follows the publication of a number of polls which show the SNP in a head to head battle with the Labour Party in the race for the next Holyrood election.

Speaking while on a campaigning visit to the Gordon constituency, Mr Salmond said:

"We have reached the tipping point in Scottish politics where the voters no longer believe that the Labour Party will be in government following next May's election.

"While the calamitous and complacent Labour Party seems to be striving to lose the next election, it is now the job of the SNP to seize this opportunity with both hands.

"We must now campaign on a positive agenda for changing Scotland for the better, rather than looking to simply capitalise on the numerous failures of the Labour Party and their inept leadership.

"We know that over the next year Labour will run an entirely negative campaign, attempting to 'engender fear' into the people of Scotland, but this tired strategy will not wash with the people of Scotland.

"We have to step up our efforts to have our positive message heard in communities across the country, we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. The prize of next year's elections is clear, but we must strive to win, we must not rely on a Labour defeat."

    NOTE FOR EDITORS

Mr Salmond will be interviewed on BBC Scotland's Politics Show tomorrow (Sunday), to discuss the progress the party has made towards wining the 2007 election.
