Commenting on the arrest today (Wednesday) of Lord Levy, SNP Leader Alex Salmond MP said:
"This is a substantial victory over cynicism and those who first dismissed the involvement of Scotland Yard in this matter.
"I think the fact that Lord Levy has been arrested whatever else it might lead to indicates that it is a proper thorough going inquiry and even the highest in the land are treated on a position of equality with everybody else.
"That is to say that if the police have reason to believe the law has been broken then that individual will be pursued.
"It is inconceivable given the closeness of the relationship between Lord Levy and the Prime Minister that Tony Blair was not aware of his fundraiser's activities. It is only a matter of time before the Prime Minister is asked serious questions about his role in this sorry mess.
"The water is lapping up around the ankles of the Prime Minister and regardless of what they say in number ten about this being a party matter Lord Levy is Tony Blair's personal friend, bag man, envoy and chief fundraiser. It is clear that the Blair house of cards is ready to tumble.
"There are few closer to the Prime Minister than Lord Levy. This goes right to the heart of Downing Street. Indeed, we know from Gulam Noon that he sent his nomination form to Downing Street.
"The basic fact is 80p out of every £1 donated to Labour has come from people honoured by Tony Blair.
"The SNP does not engage in political nominations for honours for the very simple reason we believe this is an essentially corrupt process, which we are determined to clean up.
"Political parties must start living within their means. The London parties should learn that it doesn't cost much to speak to people."
