Wilson supports Communication Workers Union call for fully public Royal Mail

Dr Bill Wilson, SNP MSP for the West of Scotland, has expressed his support of the Communication Workers Union’s (CWU) call for the Royal Mail to remain a fully public service.

Dr Wilson was speaking after recently meeting CWU representatives in the Scottish Parliament. He said: “I agree with the CWU that there should be an end to the creeping privatisation and fragmentation of the Royal Mail we have seen in recent years.

“Royal Mail should not be exposed to unfair private competition by farming out its more profitable components. The UK Government is, I believe, doing this systematically as a prelude to the culling of so-called ‘uneconomic’ branches. The mantra that privatisation is best is mindless and damaging, as events are showing. The IMF, and the other architects of neo-liberalism, are being exposed as vacuous ideologues.”

“If we want a caring and fair society then public services, such as the Royal Mail, should be well-financed and universal, with well-staffed branches offering a wide range of branches to all Scotland’s citizens. Also, as part of a fair society, it goes without saying that postal workers’ pensions should be on a par with those of other public services.”

Dr Wilson concluded his remarks by saying, "Of course I believe that an independent Scotland would handle its postal services with more intelligence and humanity. Given that Scotland is not, as yet, independent, I can but endorse the view of Dave Ward, the Deputy General Secretary of the CWU, who told me that he thought that Scottish postal services should have more autonomy."
