Cllr Anne McNair, SNP Councillor for Bishopbriggs North and Torrance, has condemned East Dunbartonshire’s Labour and Tory councillors for blocking the wishes of the majority of councillors to use new-found funding to reinstate shorter school travel distances.
Councillor McNair commented “The additional funding available to East Dunbartonshire Council was double what had been anticipated.
“Councillors had a rare opportunity to respond to community concerns about the safety of our children travelling to school. There was sufficient funding to reinstate the shorter school travel distances, to retain the school crossing patrol officers, to save the mobile library service, to retain the funding for breakfast clubs and still have money to top up the council’s reserves.
“Labour and Tory councillors showed complete intransigence and blocked all attempts to even discuss any of these options.
“Despite a clear majority of councillors supporting the move to protect school travel arrangements, the ten Labour and Tory councillors used council procedures to protect their flawed budget proposals.
“This blatant refusal to respond to community concerns is outrageous and will cost their parties heavily in the forthcoming election.”
